The founder of Arbor Tree Care

The founder of Arbor Tree Care gained a great interest in the outdoors during his time in the Boy Scouts where he achieved its highest rank of Eagle. When in high school he had the opportunity to attend the only Vo-tech school in the country at that time, which offered a course in Arboriculture. So, it was natural for his high school work experience to be pruning the fruit trees on a 200 plus acre apple tree farm.

Being that the industry was still in its infancy, there weren’t any colleges that offered a degree majoring in Arboriculture, so he decided on a Horticulture degree which he obtained from SUNY Delhi located in the Catskill mountains of New York.

During his first summer break he was hired as the resident Arborist working on the estate of Samuel Morse, who is the son of the inventor of the Morse Code. During future summer breaks he would head south for Hampton Roads, working for local tree services that existed at that time, moving to Hampton Roads for good after graduating.

Since his passion was to achieve a higher standard of practice in the area, he started his own business where he could control professionalism by promoting the advancing industry standards.

Back in the early 80s, there weren’t any Arborist certification programs. So, he studied for and passed the Maryland Tree Expert licensing test while still providing tree care and removal services in Hampton Roads.

Eventually the International Society of Arboriculture board had offered a knowledge test which was the birth of the Certified Arborist program. Wanting to stay on the cutting edge of the industry, he took the test and became one of the first 100 Certified Arborists in the Mid Atlantic chapter which now has over 2000 Certified Arborists.

Continuing with his innovative approach to the tree service business where by he could better serve his clients and reduce the inherent risk of working with trees, a new crane was purchased. Even though the state does not require a crane operator to go through any type of certification for the tree service industry, once again Arbor Tree Care’s founder took it upon himself to obtain his crane operators certification .

The founder is still very involved with the daily task of completing the work as he’s on most job sites running equipment, operating the crane or aloft in a tree even after all these years.

The printing of this short biography is written to inform potential clients what backs up the Arbor Tree Care name and how through dedication, his dream of doing something he loves became a trusted name in our community.
